GSpace is a space combat game, which allows players to fly around
in ships, fighting against each other. GSpace can only be played
online with other players, through a method called Server/Client.
This means that when the player starts up a program on his local
machine ("The Client"), it connects through the Internet
to a Server, which keeps track of all the various players and
is responsible for keeping the various clients up to date.
GSpace was inspired from the days in the original Internet, where
text based multiplayer games called Multi User Dimensions (MUDs)
was popular. Back in those days, 100's of players would interact
with each in a massive world. Games like Everquest were inspired
by these games, taking on many elements from the original MUD
days. With MUDs, which used to have a science fiction theme, would
require some way of simulating this. So external modules for the
MUDs were made, called Space Engines. These would allow players
to fly around in space, trade and fight with other players.
What is the "G" in GSpace?
The "G" in GSpace actually stands for "Graphical".
GSpace was actually inspired by "Space Engines" that
plugged into massive online text games called Multi-User Dimensions
(MUDs for short). In these games it traditional to name the engine
"Space" along with a one-letter descriptor. For example,
CSpace would actually stand for "Chuckles Space" when
expanded.
GSpace tries to carry on this tradition, although now GSpace
doesn't plug into a text based game anymore, we have tried to
bring across many elements that were found in the traditional
engines.
What license is GSpace released under?
GSpace is released under an open source licensed call the GNU
GPL license. This license gives both myself and other users the
most amount of flexibility. This means that users may download
the source, and alter it how they see fit. Although you can sell
GSpace, you must give away a copy of the source-code with the
program and then that user is free to distribute how they fit,
without any restrictions.
